I.  Recap

  • Paul said in Romans 1:16: The Gospel is the power of God unto salvation
    • the power of God unto sozo — wholeness in every area of life;  nothing missing, nothing broken; wholly healed and delivered;
  • Problem is if the Gospel has the power to do that why aren’t more people living completely whole, healed and delivered?
    • Maybe we’ve heard a different gospel preached
    • one that focuses on sin instead of the good news of God’s grace
  • In fact, when Romans is taught it is usually sin focused
    • the total depravity of mankind and their need of a Savior
    • separation from God because of sin and God’s wrath against sinners
    • we receive justification and forgiveness of sins because of OUR FAITH in Jesus
    • and then we have freedom from that sin through our continual obedience to God.
    • but we still always have an internal struggle between doing right and sinning (ch. 7)
  • What we come away with is:
    • man is sinful
    • God is Holy and can’t look upon sin
    • sinful man is separated from God until he has faith IN Jesus
    • only then is he made clean and righteous
    • anyone who doesn’t “believe” is separated from God and unrighteous
    • and is subject to God’s wrath

And we call this the Gospel

  • But this concept of separation from God because of our sin was not the Gospel that Paul taught
    • and, it’s not what he taught in Romans
    • and it’s not what Jesus revealed to us about the nature of God
      • without a correct understanding of God’s nature, we will have a misunderstanding of this Gospel of Grace that Paul preached.
      • and we will construct a Gospel not rooted in the finished work of Christ
  • The Gospel of Grace is all about our union with Christ
    • Jn 17:21:  that all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You, that they also may be in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me
    • Eph 1:4: just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world for us to be holy and blameless before Him, in love
    • Col 2:12 (Mirror):  your co-inclusion in Christ is what God’s faith knew when he powerfully raised him from the dead.
    • Hos 6:2:  and on the third day he will raise us up so we can live in his presence.
  • Paul’s message was INSIDE YOU IS CHRIST!
    • Paul uses the phrases “in Christ,” “in Him,” and “in Whom” more than 130 times in his writings.
      • I’ve attached a list at the bottom of this study
    • he only preached the finished work of the Cross
    • and he describes his conversion as that he simply “awakened” to Christ who was already in him
      • Gal 1:16: (v. 15 – it pleased the Father)… v. 16….to reveal his Son in me
  • This message — this Gospel of grace — was given to Paul directly from Jesus
    • Gal 1:12-13:  For I certify to you, brothers, that the gospel I preached is not devised by man. (13) I did not receive it from any man, nor was I taught it; rather I received it by revelation FROM JESUS CHRIST.

“Paul’s epistles are Jesus, the head of the church, talking to us from the right hand of God. The triumphant, risen Christ is still talking after His resurrection. He speaks to us from His place of victory. He is seated. Redemption is finished.” ~ Mark Hankins (Paul’s System of Truth)

  • Paul preached the Gospel of Grace, the Gospel of Jesus
    • it was for ALL mankind
    • it revealed new humanity, a new creation
    • one that was no longer in Adam but IN CHRIST
    • there was no longer a sin nature but Christ’s nature in mankind
  • Abundant grace is the “sound doctrine” that he taught
    • Actually Paul called it hyper-pleonazo grace: meaning super abounding; beyond counting; super, exceedingly abundant;
      • 1 Tim 1:14:  And the grace of our Lord was exceeding abundant with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.
    • Because that’s who God is… it’s His nature!
      • Ex 34:6:  And the LORD passed by before him, and proclaimed, The LORD, The LORD God, merciful and gracious (grace), long-suffering, and abundant in goodness and truth,
      • abundant in Hebrew is “rab” meaning so abundant, that there is nothing to compare it to.
  • Our Father is super, exceedingly abundant (hyper-pleonazo) beyond all compare (rab) in Grace… in Mercy… in Long-suffering… in Goodness (relentless covenant love)… and in Truth.

II. Sound Doctrine

We don’t have time to look at every reference to sound doctrine… hopefully, this serves as a jumping off point for you to further study……

  • Sound doctrine is the Gospel (good news) of Jesus:

1 Tim 1:11-12:  ….if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine; (11) According to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which was committed to my trust.

  • sound doctrine (hugies) is that which is according to the Gospel of the glory of God
  • sound doctrine is according to the Gospel of Jesus — He is the glory of God
      • Hebrews 1:3:  who being the radiance of His glory
  • Sound doctrine is the finished work of Christ

1 Tim 6:3: If anyone teaches another doctrine and does not draw near, being sound in the words of our Lord Jesus Christ and the teaching according to godliness

  • this verse says sound doctrine (hugies) is according to godliness and in the words of Jesus
    • Jesus’ final words on the Cross were:  IT IS FINISHED
    • Jesus’ words were also the Gospel of Grace He gave to Paul
        • Gal 1:12-13:  For I certify to you, brothers, that the gospel I preached is not devised by man. (13) I did not receive it from any man, nor was I taught it; rather I received it by revelation FROM JESUS CHRIST.
    • according to godliness
        • 1 Tim 3:16 tells us the mystery of godliness:  And confessedly, great is the mystery of godliness: Who was revealed in the flesh, was justified in the Spirit, was seen by angels, was proclaimed among the nations, was believed on in the world, was taken up in glory.
            • the mystery of godliness is the finished work of Christ
        • 2 Peter 1:3 According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue
        • the finished work of Christ has given us all things that pertain to godliness and life
        • the finished work of Christ has given us His nature and His life in us and through us
  • Sound doctrine is salvation to ALL mankind

Titus 2:11:  For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men

  • BUT God’s grace APPEARED (shined upon) AND IS salvation to ALL mankind!
    • Jn 1:1-7
    • Jn 1:17: …. grace and truth came through (dia: completely and successfully through) Jesus
    • Jesus was grace and truth personified
    • He is the Light, the Truth, that shined upon ALL mankind
  • the Greek says:  Indeed, the grace of God appeared, salvation (sozo) to ALL mankind
    • it doesn’t say God’s grace BRINGS salvation to all men — that makes it sound like His grace brings and invitation of salvation to all men
    • BUT God’s grace APPEARED (SHINED UPON) AND  IS salvation to ALL mankind!
  • Jesus is salvation to ALL mankind

Sound doctrine is the Christ Life in us

Col 2:12: Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;

  • instructing us to live soberly, righteously, and godly in this present world
    • soberly is sophron meaning a sound mind; a saved mind; from the root sozo (salvation);  it is the mind of Christ;
    • righteously — not what we do but who we are
        • 2 Cor 5:21: For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
        • Eph 4:24:  Put on your new nature, created to be like God–truly righteous and holy
    • for the word godly we don’t need to go to the Greek or the Hebrew… the suffix “ly” means having the quality of
      • it simply means to be like God
      • Gen 1:26: “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness.”
  • grace instructs us, trains us — grace matures us to live the Christ life – with the mind of Christ, His righteousness and made in the image and likeness of God — and to live that life NOW
    • sounds like Paul in Gal 2:20: I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me

Sound doctrine teaches healing

  • sound in Greek comes from the root hugies and one of it’s meanings is healed, whole, well;
    • That word is used in 3 Jn 1:2:  Beloved, I pray you to prosper concerning all things and to be in good health, just as your soul prospers.
      • good health is hugies
    • it is also used in John 5:6 when Jesus asked the lame man if he wants to be healed (made well);

Sound doctrine is our completeness in Christ (the fullness of the Godhead alive in us)

2 Tim 1:13:  Hold on to the pattern of sound teaching you have heard from me, with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.

  • sound in Greek comes from the root hugies which means whole, healed, restored, well; safe and sound;
    • The Hebrew word for wholeness is shalem meaning made whole; nothing missing, nothing broken; complete; sound; safe;
        • Col 2:9-10:  For in Christ lives all the fullness of God in a human body. (10) So you also are complete through your union with Christ, who is the head over every ruler and authority.
  • the fullness of the Godhead that dwells in Christ also lives in us because we are IN HIM — making us complete, filled to the full; WHOLE

  • Paul warns us about being carried off through philosophies and teachings that are not according to Christ in Col 2:8 because only in Christ are we filled to fullness, complete (v. 9-10)
    • Col 2:8 Take heed lest there will be anyone taking you captive through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the principles of the world and not according to Christ.
  • v. 11-15 Paul really sums up what sound doctrine is and it sounds a lot like Romans 5:18 through 6:14!
    • I’m going to include the Mirror translations because I think it really opens up these Scriptures.

  • ALL mankind have a new nature
    • v. 11- In Him you were also circumcised in the putting off of your sinful nature, with the circumcision performed by Christ and not by human hands.
      • Mirror:  You were in Christ when he died which means that his death represents your true circumcision. Sin’s authority in the human body was stripped off you in him dying your death.
    • Romans 5:18:  Yes, Adam’s one sin brings condemnation for everyone, but Christ’s one act of righteousness brings a right relationship with God and new life for everyone.
      • Mirror:  The conclusion is clear:  it took just one offense to condemn mankind; one act of righteousness declares the same mankind innocent.
      • The Phillips translation reads: “We see then, that as one act of sin exposed the whole race of men to condemnation, so one act of perfect righteousness presents all men freely acquitted in the sight of God!”)
  • ALL mankind are co-buried and co-raised
    • v. 12 – Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.
      • Mirror: In the same parallel (your co-circumcision in his death) your co-burial and joint-resurrection is now demonstrated in baptism; your co-inclusion in Christ is what God’s faith knew when He powerfully raised Him from the dead.
    • Rom 6:4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
      • Mirror: Baptism pictures how we were co-buried together with Christ in His death; then it powerfully illustrates how in God’s mind we were co-raised with Christ into a new lifestyle (Hos 6:2).
  • ALL mankind have been forgiven of sin and made alive in Him
    • v. 13: And you being dead in the trespasses and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, He made alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our trespasses,
      • Mirror: You were once spiritually dead, as confirmed in your constant failure; being bound to a lifestyle ruled by the distorted desires of the flesh, but now God has made you alive together with Him, having forgiven all of your trespasses.
    • Romans 6:11:  So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.
      • Mirror: This reasoning is equally relevant to you.  Calculate the cross; there can be only one logical conclusion:  He died your death; that means you died to sin, and are now alive to God. Sin-consciousness can never again feature in your future!  You are in Christ Jesus;  His Lordship is the authority of this union.
      • Message:  From now on, think of it this way:  Sin speaks a dead language that means nothing to you;  God speaks your mother tongue, and you hang on every word.  You are dead to sin and alive to God.  That’s what Jesus did.”

I love that!  Sin is a dead language!  Grace is God’s language and that’s now our language!  He only speaks grace to us…. He doesn’t speak a dead language:  Sin!

  • ALL mankind are no longer under law but under grace
    • v. 14-15: He canceled the record of the charges against us and took it away by nailing it to the cross. (15) In this way, he disarmed the spiritual rulers and authorities. He shamed them publicly by his victory over them on the cross.
      • Mirror:  His body nailed to the cross hung there as the document of man’s guilt; in dying our death, he deleted the detailed hand written record of Adam’s fall.  Every stain that sin left on our conscience was fully blotted out.  (15)  His brilliant victory made a public spectacle of every rule and authority empowered by the fall of Adam.  The voice of the Cross will never be silenced
    • Romans 6:14:  For sin shall no longer be your master, because you are not under the law, but under grace.
      • Mirror: Sin was your master while the law was your measure; now grace rules.

Yes! the law revealed your slavery to sin, now grace reveals your freedom from it

  • Remember in these verses that Paul is talking to a transitional generation — those born before the cross and alive after
    • when you read them, try mentally exchange the “you” for “all mankind”
  • It reveals a finished work that took place at the cross — not when you prayed the “sinner’s prayer.”
    • He does it supernaturally
  • United Pursuit has a song entitled Let it Happen
    • One verse says He whispers to your heart to let it go and be alive
    • That’s Romans 6:11 – reckon yourself dead to sin and alive to God
      • that verse is an imperative passive
      • The imperative is a command BUT passive means it happens to you

That’s grace in action!! He whispers a command to your heart “You’re dead to sin and alive to Me.”

  • The Gospel of Grace is the power of God unto salvation
    • power is dunamis – supernatural miracle-working power; resurrection power according to Phil 3:10;
    • It’s His resurrection power that the Gospel of Grace releases when it is preached
  • Jn 6:44 tells us that it is the Father that draws us to the Son
    • Draws is helko in Greek meaning to to drag by power if necessary!! To compel by irresistible authority;
      • that compelling, irresistible authority is His love;
      • He draws us by enlightening the understanding, bending the will, sweetly alluring us by the power of his grace, and engaging the soul to come to Christ;
      • He draws us with His relentless covenant love. Just as music draws the ear or love draws the heart — His love is a compelling force
    • Paul trusted in that power of God — that irresistible force of love —  to be released into the hearer’s hearts when he preached the Gospel of Grace
  • The Gospel of Grace reveals that Adam was crucified at the Cross, and no part of him survived
    • Christ did a COMPLETE, FINISHED work that changed ALL of mankind
    • there is nothing more to be done except awake to it — awake to who we (ALL men) are in Him

and that’s something the Father takes great delight in — waking us up by revealing Christ in us just like He did in Paul (Gal 1:15-16)

  • Paul didn’t preach a Romans Road TO Salvation that is built around sin consciousness
  • He preached a Finished Road OF Salvation IN CHRIST that is built around Son consciousness
  • And he used all of the beautiful co-words of the Gospel to show us this Finished Road
    • co-crucified – Gal 2:20; Rom 6:6; Rom 7:4; Col 2:20; Col 3:3; 2 Tim 2:11;
    • co-buried – Rom 6:4; Col 2:12;
    • co-resurrected – Rom 6:4-5; Col 2:12; Col 3:1; Eph 2:6;
    • co-seated – Eph 2:6;
    • co-heirs – Romans 8:17
  • A sound doctrine teaches IT IS FINISHED!
