I.  Intro

  • When He shouted TETELESTAI – IT IS FINISHED from the cross it was a cry of victory!
    • it was a declaration of consummation… He was saying, it’s ended, it’s done, it’s over!
  • In Revelation 21:5-6, John heard Jesus declare from the throne… “Behold, I make ALL things new. Write: for these words are faithful and true. It is DONE! I AM the Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End.”
    • Done is ginomai in Greek which means to emerge; transitioning from one condition or one realm to another; it signifies a change of condition, state or place
    • He had just said in verse 5 – I make ALL new!
      • His finished work changed EVERYTHING!
        • He completely conquered sin and death
        • In Him ALL of Adam died because of His finished work
        • ALL of the effects of death were cancelled… sickness, disease, poverty, fear, depression, addiction, etc.
        • His finished work made the “fall” as if it never happened from the Father’s perception
        • His finished work rescued mankind from the dominion of darkness (sin and death as a result of a mistaken identity) and brought us (past tense fact) into the kingdom of His Son
        • In Him, we are WHOLE, complete, perfect, holy, righteous, justified, healed, prosperous, etc.
        • In Him, we have peace with God – in union with God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit
        • Filled with all of the FULLNESS of the Godhead living in us, as us and through us!
  • IT IS DONE! ALL MADE NEW! IT IS FINISHED!
  • We are WHOLE – nothing missing, nothing broken in our lives HERE and NOW.

II.  Recap

  • We looked at Hebrews 1:1-3: God who at various times and in various ways spoke in times past to the fathers by the prophets; (2) has in these last days spoken to us by His Son whom He has appointed Heir of ALL things through Whom also He made the worlds; (3) Who being the brightness of His glory, and the express image of his person (or the exact representation of His nature), and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;
    • The word by in verse 2 is the word “en” and can also be translated IN
    • So, God has spoken to us IN and BY His Son
    • What has He spoken to us IN and BY His Son?
      • v. 3 says when He had by Himself purged our sins, He SAT DOWN at the right hand of the Majesty on high
      • He purged our sins – by Himself… no help from us
      • And then He SAT DOWN in a position of REST at the right hand of the Majesty on High!
  • Then we looked at Hebrews 8:1: Now this is the MAIN POINT of the things we are saying. We have such a High Priest who IS SEATED at the Right Hand of the throne of the majesty in the Heavens
    • So, in other words, HE IS SEATED is the main point or the sum (the total) of what God has spoken IN and BY His Son
  • Rev 3:21 says He overcame and SAT DOWN with His Father on His throne
    • He SAT DOWN because He OVERCAME
    • Hebrews 1:3 – He purged ALL sin for ALL time and He SAT DOWN
    • He finished the work and SAT DOWN
  • What work did He finish?
    • Adam’s obedience
    • He subdued the earth, He ruled over it SO THAT there is nothing left to do – ALL made new!
    • And NOW from the Father’s perspective it is as if the “fall” NEVER happened
  • His sitting down is the equivalent of God finishing His work and resting on the 7th day
    • God rested because everything, including Adam and Eve (who were ALL mankind at the time) was finished, perfect, complete – nothing missing, nothing broken
    • Jesus SAT DOWN because everything, including ALL mankind, was finished, perfect, complete – nothing missing, nothing broken
  • So, if the fall has been eradicated through the finished work of Jesus then so has everything connected with it – sin, death, the nature of Adam, sickness, disease, poverty, fear, etc.

III. Father’s Will

Hebrews 10:10-14: By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. (11) And every priest stands daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins: (12) But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down on the right hand of God; (13) From henceforth expecting till his enemies be made his footstool. (14) For by one offering he hath perfected forever them that ARE sanctified.

  • Verse 10: By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all
    • the word by is “en” which is translated IN – it’s a position
    • So, it says, IN that will we are sanctified (made holy)
  • Which will?
    • In verse 9 Jesus says “I have come to do Your (Father) will — the Father’s will
    • IN the Father’s will THROUGH (dia – completely, successfully through) Jesus, we HAVE BEEN made holy!!
  • So back to verse 9 again… Then He said, “Behold I (Jesus) have come to do Your (Father’s) will. He takes away (abolishes) the first, that the second may be established.”
    • The Father’s will was to do away with the 1st (covenant) and establish the 2nd (covenant).
    • IN the Father’s will – abolishing the 1st covenant and establishing the 2nd covenant – which He did completely, successfully through Jesus, we HAVE BEEN sanctified.
  • We have been made holy, pure, blameless, set apart.
    • It’s in the perfect passive tense
      • passive meaning it was all His doing
      • perfect meaning an action that was completed in the past with results still occurring in the present;
  • It says in Greek: IN that will having been sanctified, we ARE
    • present tense – it was completed… we HAVE BEEN sanctified and our sanctification is continuous and ongoing
    • You can’t lose your sanctification – it was all His doing and He completed it and we remain sanctified in Him.
  • We were sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus
    • through is DIA! completely and successfully
      • completely successfully through His sacrifice… not when we believed, but through His sacrifice alone.
      • There was only ONE sacrifice and it was for ALL time and for ALL people – Once and for all!
  • Paul said WE are sanctified
    • Who is the we?
      • The “we” has to be all… Jesus said the Father’s will was that He seek and save ALL that was lost
  • All were sanctified completely, successfully, 100% through the ONCE FOR ALL sacrifice of Jesus

IV.  We HAVE BEEN sanctified

  • What does sanctified mean?
    • it means to be made holy; to be set apart from AND separated unto;
  • Holy is a word we have misused and made a religious thing out of
    • we’ve linked it with “right” behavior
    • but that’s NOT what holy means
  • When we say God is holy, what it means is:  He is set apart unto your love and care and provision
    • It means He has set Himself apart “wholly unto you” completely unto you — He’s there for you all the time.
    • He’s never not there; He is ALWAYS there with your welfare in mind
    • He’s separated from every other god, every foreign god, every inadequate, disabled god AND set apart unto you
    • That’s HOLY
  • So, when the Scripture is talking about you being sanctified, it means He separated you from ALL of the sin and the death, all of those things that were corrupting your relationship with Him and all of the wonderfulness of the life He created for you
    • AND He has set you apart UNTO His benefit, unto His blessing
    • That’s HOLY
  • So, it says in verse 10, IN that will WE have been sanctified
    • WE – the whole world has been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all
    • the whole world is holy UNTO God – separated from sin and set apart unto Him
    • EVERYONE holy, blameless and above reproach in the Father’s sight
      • all because of Jesus’ finished work
    • Sanctification isn’t a process… Sanctification is Jesus
      • 1 Cor 1:30 It is because of Him that you are IN Christ Jesus, who has become for us Wisdom, Righteousness, Sanctification and Redemption
  • Verses 11-12: and every priest stands ministering daily and offering repeatedly the same sacrifices that can never take away sins. (12) BUT this Man
    • notice it called Him a Man
    • but this Man after He had offered ONE sacrifice for sins FOREVER SAT DOWN at the right hand of God
  • Verse 13-14: from that time waiting until His enemies were made a footstool. (14) For by ONE offering He had perfected forever those who were being sanctified
    • So according to this, God is not making people holy today
      • He already did… once for all – v. 14: for by ONE sacrifice
  • In verse 11, it said those Old Covenant priests were STANDING ministering
    • why did they have to stand?
      • because there was repetition involved… they couldn’t afford to get comfortable, they couldn’t afford to sit down
      • it had to be done daily… every time someone fell they had to bring a sacrifice.
      • there were so many sacrifices offered on a moment by moment, day by day basis
  • BUT HE SAT DOWN
    • why?
    • because we all HAVE BEEN made holy… perfected forever

IV.  We HAVE BEEN perfected

  • Verse 14 says we HAVE BEEN perfected forever
    • Perfected forever means COMPLETED FOREVER
  • He offered the ONE sacrifice (for ALL) and He sat down FOREVER because He perfected or completed those (all – everyone) that He sanctified (made holy).
  • Remember, this is the main point – He sat down
    • This is what God, the Father is saying in and by His Son
      • When we are still preaching about asking God to forgive us and how we need to be purged from sin, we realize we haven’t HEARD what God the Father is saying IN and BY His Son
      • Which is He did it ALL and He did it ONCE for ALL – and then He SAT DOWN FOREVER having completed, perfected us.
    • He did it for you AND for Osama bin Laden at the same time!
      • ONCE FOR ALL – there is no us and them in God’s thinking
    • Jesus isn’t healing today
      • HE DID IT ONCE FOR ALL
        • By His stripes you were healed and then He SAT DOWN!
        • He bore our sicknesses and carried our diseases and SAT DOWN
    • We pray, Lord give me peace!
      • The chastisement of our peace was upon Him and HE SAT DOWN!
        • if you’re not at peace it’s because you haven’t HEARD what the Father has spoken to you IN and BY His Son
          • you may have heard preaching about it, but you haven’t HEARD (understood what the Father has said)
    • Men aren’t BECOMING righteous today!
      • through the one act of righteousness there resulted justification of life to ALL men (Rom 5:18)
      • Rom 4:25 says He was raised because of our justification
        • in other words, if we weren’t justified, made righteous, then He’d still be in the grave
        • but we’ve WERE justified so He WAS raised
      • so, He’s not making people righteous today
        • He did it ONCE FOR ALL — there are no unrighteous from God’s perspective
    • We pray, purify my heart O God or create in me a clean heart
      • He did it ONCE FOR ALL – there are no unclean hearts, impure hearts as far as God is concerned
    • So, Jesus delivered, He healed, He justified, He sanctified and He prospered, He completed (perfected) ALL men for ALL time at ONE time and He SAT DOWN forever!
  • Now the SUM or the main point of all of His expenditures (His finished work) is that He is seated at the Father’s right-hand FOREVER
    • He’s not getting back up to do something… IT IS FINISHED
    • This is the main point that we need to get.
  • We may not be experiencing it, but that doesn’t change the fact that…
    • It is finished, and He sat down forever
    • And as we hear correctly this main point, we will begin to believe it and experience the benefits of His finished work
      • Notice I said experience the benefits of it
        • We don’t believe and BECOME righteous, perfect, holy, WHOLE, etc
        • We believe it and then walk in the experience of who we have always been in the Father’s perception.
  • Next week we will look at Ephesians 1:15-22 – Paul’s prayer that we comprehend the COMPLETENESS of our redemption
