Healing part 1 – Jehovah Rapha

Notes for this Bible study are just below the video….

I. Introduction
  • For the past couple of months, we’ve been studying our wholeness in Christ
  • We looked at Ephesians chapter 1 and ended on verse 11: in Him ALSO we have obtained an inheritance
    • Wholeness is our inheritance and part of that wholeness is living in abundant health
    • But too often we live by our experiences with sickness and disease rather than from what God says is true – He is the Lord our Health
    • And that is the truth that is to be our daily experience in life
  • We’re going to spend several weeks renewing our minds on the subject of healing or more specifically wholeness in the area of our health
  • We’ll start by laying a foundation for studying Scripture in the Old Testament
    • And then we’ll move on to looking at the Exodus
      • and how entering into the practical experience of our inheritance of abundant health begins with a revelation of Israel’s exodus from Egypt
II. Laying a foundation
Romans 15:4: For whatever things were written before were written for our learning that we through patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope.
  • Paul says whatever things were written before
    • What is he talking about? What does written before mean?
      • the Old Testament writings
      • He is saying — whatever things were written in the Old Testament, they were written for our learning– for our teaching and instruction.
    • Then he goes on to tell us why….. so that, through the endurance and encouragement of the Scriptures, we might have hope
      • New Testament hope in Greek means confident expectation
    • So, what he’s saying here is the things that were written before (in the Old Testament) were written for our instruction so that we might develop a confident expectation of victorious, successful living
  • 1 Cor 10:11: Now all these things happened to them as examples, and they were written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages have come.
    • Who is them?
      • Israel
    • Admonition is instruction; the placing of the mind; instruction for the mind;
    • So again, we see that all these things — the things that were written before in the Old Testament — happened TO them as examples and were written FOR OUR instruction
      • they were intended to instruct you and me today so that we can develop an expectation of success in our experience in this life
      • that’s WHY they were written
  • But it’s vital that we establish some parameters of interpretation before we dig back in the Old Testament — otherwise we get sucked back into the law and legalism and the revival of Judaistic practice in the church
    • which was the very thing that Paul spoke against in Galatians and which the writer of Hebrews himself spoke about
    • so, we have to have some parameters for going back into the things that were written before in order to learn from them
      • otherwise we learn stuff that we’re not supposed to learn
  • 1 Peter 1:10-12: Of which salvation the prophets have inquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you: (11) Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow. (12) Unto whom it was revealed, that not unto themselves, but unto us they did minister the things, which are now reported unto you by them that have preached the gospel unto you with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven; which things the angels desire to look into.
    • here we find our parameters — these are to be our filters of interpretation
      • v. 10 – he referred to the grace
      • v. 11 – he referred to the glories
      • v. 12 – he referred to the Gospel – or good news
    • what we are allowed to receive out of the Old Testament writings is:
      • grace
      • glory — glory is the view and opinion of God; it’s the nature and acts of God in manifestation
      • good news
    • So, as we go back into Old Testament teaching — anything that is not a revelation of GRACE, GLORY OR GOOD NEWS is stuff we need to leave there
      • it’s stuff that we don’t need to bring forward with us in our experiences
  • Now, with those parameters assigned we can dive into the Old Testament – only pulling out of the things written – grace, glory and good news (gospel)
    • don’t allow anyone to drag you back into the Old Testament interpreting Romans 15:4 as ALL things were written for our instruction so we need to reintroduce Judaistic practice back in the church, dragging you back into the law and legalism
    • NO – you want to run from that as fast as you can, or you’ll never get healed
  • Eph 1:7: in Him we have redemption, forgiveness of our sins, through the shedding of His blood
    • 4 verses later in v. 11 it says in Him ALSO we have obtained an inheritance
    • so not only have we been redeemed but we have also obtained an inheritance
  • Entering into the practical experience of our inheritance begins with a revelation of Israel’s exodus from Egypt
    • because when they left Egypt, what were they were heading for?
      • the promised land – the inheritance that had been promised to Abraham 430 years prior
    • so we’re going to talk about entering into the experience of the inheritance that we have obtained in Christ
  • We’re also going to look at some types and shadows in the Old Testament story of the exodus — types and shadows were pictures of things to come
    • Pharaoh – he was the hard task master; the one that did not know Joseph;
      • he assumes the type of satan in the Old Testament
        • Ezekiel 29 refers to him as a great monster, or great serpent
      • Not all prior pharaohs… just this one
        • one of the prior pharaohs was a friend of Abraham
        • and at least one of them was a friend of Joseph
      • so, beginning with THIS Pharaoh — he is a type of satan (an adversary)
    • Egypt – is a type of sin – the condition not the behaviors
      • We’re talking about the condition that destroyed mankind
        • The condition called sin
    • Egyptians are a type of death;
      • what was death?
        • the effect of sin
      • death isn’t referring to simply the cessation of life — either spiritual or physical
        • it’s referring to all of the attributes of death — sickness, disease, poverty, addiction, etc
      • all of those things that are a result of the condition SIN having come into the world
III. Death through sin
Romans 5:12: Therefore, just as through one man, sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned
  • Who was the one man?
    • Adam
  • Then notice it says death through sin
    • so apart from sin there is no death
    • sin and death are a cause and effect relationship
      • sin is the cause
      • death is the effect
  • Then it says thus death passed to all men because all sinned
    • the attributes of death… sickness, disease, poverty, fear, etc — they spread to all men
      • spread is dierchomai meaning to spread as a report;
    • 1 Peter 1:18 knowing that you were redeemed from your futile manner of life handed down from your fathers, not by perishable things–by silver or by gold
      • Futile manner is unproductive, ineffective, unreal manner of life
      • Handed down is tradition handed down from forefathers; the traditional way of doing things i.e. passed down from ancestors
    • The attributes of death spread to all men – men passed on these attributes of death that they experienced
      • same as we do today – grandparents and parents had a disease, so we expect to have it; poverty, failure, fear, etc. as a way of life is passed down generation after generation until someone chooses something else — questioning whether what has been passed down is to remain in their thinking
      • these effects of death — … sickness, disease, poverty, fear – spread as a report from generation to generation
  • BUT they first entered into the world through sin
  • So, here’s what you need to remember — effect only exists so long as cause persists
    • in other words, if you remove the cause the effects are gone
IV. Going Out
  • Remember our foundation — the things that were written before were written for our instruction so that we might develop a confident expectation of success in our experience in this life
    • we’ve read that the things that happened to Israel happened as examples and were written for our admonition
      • admonition – noustheios – for our mind placement; or to instruct our minds
      • the word exodus literally means “going out”
  • So exodus then is written to instruct our minds in what?
    • in the grace, glory, and good news of the going out of mankind from sin and death
    • that’s what the Old Testament is written to do – to reveal to us the grace, glory and good news (Gospel) of our “going out” from sin and death – our exodus
V. Exodus
  • We’re going to start on the God side of the Red Sea
    • then we’ll retreat across and deal with things on the Egypt side of the Red Sea
    • but we’ll first deal with the God side
  • Now the Red Sea is a type of the blood of Jesus
    • it stood between Egypt and the people of God it created an impassable barrier between Egypt and Israel
  • In Exodus 15 the children of Israel have just come out of the Red Sea
    • Exodus 15:22-26: So, Moses brought Israel from the Red Sea; then they went out into the Wilderness of Shur. And they went 3 days in the wilderness and found no water (23) Now when they came to Marah, they could not drink the waters of Marah, for they were bitter. Therefore, the name of it was called Marah. (24) and the people complained against Moses, saying, “what shall we drink?” (25) So, he cried out to the LORD, and the LORD showed him a tree. When he cast it into the waters, the waters were made sweet. There He made a statute and an ordinance for them, and there He tested them, (26) and said if you diligently heed the voice of the LORD your God and do what is right in His sight and give ear to His commandments and keep an eye on His statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you which I have brought on the Egyptians. For I am the LORD who heals you.”
    • There’s a lot we’re going to deal with in these verses — but first let’s look at verse 26
  • the major portion of this verse – let’s call it 26aand said if you diligently heed the voice of the LORD your God and do what is right in His sight and give ear to His commandments and keep an eye on His statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you which I have brought on the Egyptians. For I am the LORD who heals you.
    • these are NOT conditions required of you in order to be healed, made whole or sound
    • these are conditions that were fulfilled ONLY by the Lord Jesus
      • there was no one that could’ve fulfilled those conditions — ONLY Jesus
    • I say this because you will find out more than once that you will run across people who make healing conditional based on this verse
      • Saying that yes, He is the Lord who heals you, BUT have you diligently heeded the voice of the Lord, doing what is right in His sight, giving ear to His commandments, keeping all His statutes
      • and of course, our answer will have to be NO
    • BUT remember what are we looking for? What are our parameters?
      • GRACE, GLORY, GOOD NEWS
    • SO, the first thing I want you to grab is these are not requirements of you — it was fulfilled for you by the Lord Jesus
      • He HAS diligently heeded the voice of the Lord His God, He HAS done what is right in His sight, He HAS given ear to His commandments, and He HAS kept all His statutes
      • thank God we don’t have to do it or we wouldn’t be healed even once!
VI. Jehovah Rapha
  • NOW… looking at the rest of v.26: I will put none of the diseases on you which I have brought on the Egyptians. For I am the LORD who heals you
    • The word “for” means because — Because I AM the Lord who heals you
  • So, the first thing i want you to see in this last part of v. 26 is that God begins right here to make an association between DISEASE AND EGYPT
    • He says: I will put none of the diseases on you which I have brought on the Egyptians. For I am the LORD who heals you
    • So again, the first thing to see is that God is beginning right here to make an association between disease and Egypt
  • let’s go to Deuteronomy 7 and then we’ll come back here to Exodus 15
    • Deuteronomy 7:15: And the LORD will take away from you ALL sickness and will afflict you with none of these terrible diseases of Egypt which you have known but will lay them on all those who hate you.
    • The LORD will afflict you with none of the terrible diseases OF Egypt which you have known
      • first of all, the word OF establishes possessive relationship between disease and Egypt
      • they are the diseases OF Egypt
    • then He says WHICH YOU HAVE KNOWN
      • but we need to first of all realize that he is making a connection between disease and Egypt
        • what is Egypt a type of?
        • SIN – the condition
    • The second thing we see in this part of the verse is that he says BECAUSE I AM JEHOVAH (YAWHEH) RAPHA
      • that word “because” is an important word to us
    • we’ve translated this verse as WHO HEALS YOU
      • and that’s an ok translation except that we need to understand that those words aren’t supposed to suggest the continuing need of healing
      • I AM the Lord who heals you — we take that to mean that every time we get sick, He will heal us
        • And that is absolutely true because God loves you and He always meets us where we’re at
        • but that’s NOT what He wanted you to get out of that verse
    • what He wanted you to get out of it is the settled state of affairs because you’re no longer associated with Egypt
      • Because I AM the Lord who heals you — I AM Jehovah Rapha
      • This verse would be better understood as — I AM the LORD your Health!
      • This verse is not about something He does… heals you
        • but rather who He IS – the Lord your Health!
        • and because of who He IS He DOES what He does
        • the Psalmist in Psalm 119:68 said You ARE good and you DO good
          • He does good because He is good
          • He IS Health and He heals
      • He is the Lord our Healer – BUT this was not intended to communicate to you and me a continuing need for healing
        • it’s intended to declare to us the established state of affairs because we are NO LONGER associated with Egypt
    • As Deuteronomy 7:15 pointed out there was a HAVE KNOWN relationship between Israel and the diseases of Egypt
      • He said None of the diseases of Egypt WHICH YOU HAVE KNOWN
      • so there had been a HAVE KNOWN relationship — they were familiar with the diseases of Egypt
        • do any of you have a HAVE KNOWN relationship with disease?
        • well hopefully by the time we’re through this series you’ll understand that your familiarity with sickness and disease should be a past tense knowing
      • What he’s saying is: you have known them BUT BECAUSE I AM Jehovah Rapha that relationship is now past tense!
      • NONE of the diseases of Egypt… because I AM Jehovah Rapha! Because I AM in your midst
  • remember we’re on the God side of the Red Sea we’re not on the Pharaoh side of the Red Sea anymore
  • And on the God side there is an impassible sea of blood!
VII. Closing
  • So, in other words we could say it this way…. as certainly as Egypt is behind you, SO IS disease!
    • Egypt was a type of sin
    • As certainly as sin is behind you, SO IS disease
  • I’m not talking about behavior — I said SIN – singular; the condition
    • whether you know it or not SIN IS BEHIND YOU
    • and actually, for US, sin never had anything to do with you because you weren’t even born when He put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself
      • that word “put away” means cancelled sin
      • so, you weren’t even born when sin was cancelled, so it has never had any relationship with you
      • and YET you have been brought up in the church to believe that you have relationship with sin (the condition) or at least had it until you “got saved” and started going to church
  • But here’s the point — as certainly as sin is behind you so is disease
  • This is what God is saying to them — You have none of the diseases of Egypt because I AM Jehovah Rapha!
  • Or you could say it this way — If they were delivered from Pharaoh – and they were – and if they were beyond the boundaries of Egypt – and they were – then they also were beyond the territorial reach of sickness and disease
Next week we’ll look at sin – the condition, not the behavior and also the Egypt side of the Red Sea
